Thirty-four years of poisoned water. A claim Congress finally allowed.
From 1953 to 1987, drinking water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was contaminated with industrial solvents and benzene. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 allowed veterans, family members, and civilian workers exposed for at least 30 days to sue the United States. The Act's filing window closed in August 2024; claims filed before then continue to move through the Navy and the federal court in North Carolina.

Lived, worked, or served at Camp Lejeune or MCAS New River for at least 30 cumulative days between August 1, 1953 and December 31, 1987 — including in utero exposure
A later diagnosis of a linked illness: kidney, liver, or bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, Parkinson's disease, and others
Filed an administrative claim with the Navy, or a lawsuit, on or before August 10, 2024

1953–1987
Wells serving base housing and workplaces are contaminated with TCE, PCE, benzene, and vinyl chloride, in some cases at hundreds of times safe limits.
1980s
Contamination is detected; the most affected wells are shut down by 1985–1987.
August 2022
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act becomes law, creating a two-year window to bring claims against the United States.
August 10, 2024
The filing deadline passes. Administrative claims filed with the Navy by that date, and lawsuits in the Eastern District of North Carolina, continue to be processed and resolved.
